Chaoshan Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section of the Chaoshan Formation is the Chaoshan section (120°13’00”E, 30°26’00”N), about 8 km northwest of the Yuhang District, Hangzhou City, northern Zhejiang Province. The section was measured by Ju (1979) from Hangzhou Institute of Petroleum Geology. The Chaoshan Formation was named by Ju (1979). The name is derived from Chaoshan Mountain in Yuhang County, Zhejiang Province.
Synonym: (超山组)
Lithology and Thickness
The Chaoshan Formation is a fine clastic sequence. In the type section the formation embraces only one lithological bed, consisting of black carbonaceous and dolomitic mudstone of 25 m thick. The formation here is restricted to its Lower part of the original formation. The dark grey argillaceous dolomite originally assigned to the Upper part of the formation by Ju (1979) has been excluded and referred to the basal part of the overlying Dachenling Fm by Song in Yu (1996). In the type section, the formation is 25 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Chaoshan Fm is in disconformable contact with the underlying Töngying Fm (Tongying Fm).
Upper contact
It is conformably overlain by the Dachenling Fm. The upper boundary is defined by the lithologic change from mudstone to argillaceous dolomite.
Regional extent
The Chaofeng Formation is exposed in the Jiangnan Slope Area of South China Region, distributed in the Chaoshan and Taishan areas of Yuhang District, northwestern Zhejiang Province (Jingshan, Chaoshan) and in the Kunshan area of southern Jiangsu Province.
GeoJSON
Fossils
